Many Avondale football players dream about playing football in college. Now there is a new avenue for making that dream come true. David Hedrick, president of the Hedrick Financial Group and a former Avondale football star, worked within the framework of the Avondale Foundation to create an annual football scholarship. The first award will be announced at the Avondale Honors Convocation in May.
“Many exceptional high school players never have the opportunity to play football in college because few scholarships are available. Playing ball requires a lot of time and commitment. When you combine that with the academic demands of any college or university, it is an extremely difficult regiment to follow,” Hedrick said. Scholarships are only available for Division 1 teams and on a limited basis for Division 2 teams. Small Division 3 teams are not allowed to give athletic scholarships. This scholarship will be directed toward those who are not receiving scholarships to play ball.
Hedrick, who went on to play football for Grand Valley State and Wisconsin after his Avondale experience, credits football with helping him develop the attributes necessary for success in life. “Setting goals, developing plans to achieve them, and making the necessary adjustments as the plan unfolds is what football and life is all about,” added Hedrick.
